History

Vision

At St John’s, we are committed to providing a high-quality history education, thereby inspiring our pupils’ natural curiosity to know more about the past, as well as giving them a solid ‘sense of time’ and an understanding of the methods of historical enquiry.

Our aim through our carefully designed History curriculum plan is to see pupils leave our school in Year 6 with a knowledge and understanding of the history of the UK and the wider world as a coherent, chronological narrative. We also strive to equip them with the skills necessary to: ask perceptive historical questions; think critically; weigh evidence; sift arguments; and develop perspective and judgement.

We hope to foster in our pupils a good understanding of the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Long Term Plan & Progression Map

Children will have two main topics of History each academic year, a British History topic and a Wider World topic.

Throughout the year children will be working on short tasks to enhance their Sense Of Time, focusing on developing their understanding of timelines.
