Reading at St John's

At St. John’s it is our ambition for our pupils to develop a love of reading from an early age. This will help them read confidently, fluently and develop a good understanding of what they are reading.

Within the school day children have many opportunities to read. Our staff encourage all of our pupils to read widely and regularly, fostering a love of reading for pleasure and to stimulate their thirst for knowledge.

Our children are exposed to a wide variety of quality texts from a range of authors, incorporating both classic and contemporary books. These books complement our inclusive school community and offer a diverse selection of literature allowing all children to find representation in a book.

Throughout the year there are many opportunities for us to celebrate reading at our school, for example visits by authors and poets, visits to local book shops, book fairs, and reading clubs to name just a few.
